Mobile Internet 2.0 workshop and course

August 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Last week I held a 3-day course - Mobile Internet 2.0 - for a UK operator. It is loosely based on my latest book, but goes well beyond that, mostly to include a more general discussion of all the kinds of Web 2.0 architectures and solutions that can be utilised for building mobile services, both browser and non-browser based (or both). In previous ‘Mobile Internet 1.0′ courses (and throughout my book) I had mostly focussed on Java server-side solutions (e.g. J2EE) because of their prevalence in operator implementations. In the course I discuss various design patterns (e.g. Model View Controller - MVC), software methods and web standards generally. However, there are plenty of examples of real solutions, so I do include an overview of how servlets, JSPs and even things like portlets can be used to map onto the MVC pattern.

I believe that the course is unique because it brings together discussions about user experience, web technologies, mobile technologies and live software demos in an integrated fashion. The course culminates in building a working mobile social network application live, taking the audience through the entire agile web 2.0 process step by step. This is done in Ruby on Rails in order to demonstrate the principles of web frameworks and web standards generally and then the various optimisations for mobile devices, including the iPhone, are shown on top of the framework.

I shall soon be posting a detailed description of the course for those interested. It is primarily aimed at operators and those getting into mobile ventures who need to revise their understanding of the latest possibilities with Web 2.0 and Mobile 2.0 approaches.
