I love my iPhone - one of my best gadgets ever. However, when riding the train along Brunel’s line from Swindon to Paddington, I’m lucky to get Edge coverage (fingers crossed for 3G). That’s when my other great gadget saves the day - the broadband modem from 3 UK - fantastic coverage all the way along the line! Completely recommend it for commuters along the line. Not sure how far the coverage extends towards Bristol and Swansea.
I even managed to download an application (TextExpander) for my Mac. A 3.3 MByte file that downloaded gracefully and at a fairly decent pace.
I’m writing this from the train as we slowdown for Didcot Parkway. There’s a funny smell - I hope it’s not from those big chimney stacks. Full-power reception according to the app, so that’s possibly a good sign for the rest of the line Westwards.
Nice that they have power sockets on these trains, so I’m plugged in and totally wireless at the same time. Fully connected!

Those power sockets can cut out on inclines as the engine optimises power delivery! I regularly use my Vodafone 3G card on the train from Stansted and, tunnels excepted, I get remarkable high-speed connection. That is not the case on the Edinburgh-Glasgow shuttle trains - can’t even make voice calls for most of the journey.

Great tips thanks Richard. Don’t think I’ll be using the Edinburgh-Glasgow anytime soon then!
