Some of my regular readers might recall that my older brother (Vince) was in a horrendous traffic accident nearly one year ago whilst training on his bike for an Ironman event. He nearly lost his life and was in King’s College Hospital ICU where they had to cool his body down and do all kinds of stuff to save his life and minimize brain damage.
He didn’t get out of hospital for 9 weeks. It was a very traumatic event that affected his family, my parents and all those around him. He is still recovering from the various physical, neurological and emotional injuries.
When I first visited him (I had to travel back to the UK from a holiday abroad, as did my parents - that was a flight never to be repeated I hope!), he was totally incapacitated, unable to speak or do much at all. Such is the nature of brain trauma, it was not known if he would ever recover from that state, which lasted a long time.
Thankfully, he has made a truly remarkable recovery - a path that he is still on and continues to battle with daily, showing those around him tremendous courage and patience that we all hope that we have inside us if, God forbid, we were ever tested to such a degree.
Unbelievably, he intends to run the London Marathon and will be raising money for King’s College Hospital ICU unit. If you have a chance, please stop by his Justgiving fundraising Page and make a donation, even if only a tiny one. It will help Vince and it will help others who need head trauma treatment in the future, which I hope and pray will never be the case for any of you.
