Mobile broadband UK

February 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Thanks to our friends at Smart Parts for their detailed survey of mobile broadband offerings in the UK. It’s worth taking a look to get a decent view across the myriad packages and options, enabling you to compare oranges with oranges (forgive the pun).

As I mentioned earlier this week, my advice is to think about how you access the Web when using mobile broadband in order to lessen your traffic, such as using the increasingly capable made-for-mobile interfaces. In this way, you’ll get a lot more out of your tariff allowance than you might otherwise. You might then want to start off with the 3UK PAYG 1GByte deal, assuming you can right off the 99 for the modem. They should have put some memory stick in the thing to sweeten the deal.

Have fun! Please let the guys at Smart Parts know about your experiences. We need to collate this info somewhere so that we can benefit the user community.

    As posted on Smart Pants…
This misses a massive point. The T-Mobile tariffs don’t have any extra charges, apart from the cost per month (all the others do).

Also, I’ve had T-Mobile for a while and contacted them about speed. They already give up to 3meg and 7.2 from April - the point is, this isn’t available everywhere, so they don’t try to mislead about it. WHEREAS, everyone is claiming ‘up to’ speeds (just like dodgy home broadband) - have you ever met anyone that’s got anything like the speeds the others advertise, apart from a *few* places in London? Even Vodafone admit when you call them that 7.2meg is ’selected’ London sites and airports - not exactly useful for most of us?

By the way, if you go over the GB on T-Mobile, they apparently tell you a few times, and then worst case, they slow you down a bit, but no nasty bills (anyone who’s tried the others will know that you can get badly caught out).

You’re right that it’sgood to shop aroud when considering getting a mobile brodband package. You can see a selection of the UK’s offerings here which i found pretty useful. Also now that USB modems and data cards are going commercial it won’t take long for the prices to fall.

has anyone else heard about femtocells? These little devices which allow 3G networking. Cool!
