Speeded up my iPhone typing considerably…

February 23rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

I have to confess, I’ve been missing my Blackberry keypad. I could type v.fast on that tiny patch of keys. Not only that, I could type accurately. Thus far, despite months of use, I don’t think I’ve managed to type a single message on the iPhone without making several typos or having to erase the auto-correction because I simply didn’t notice the replacement to what I was typing. That’s because I’m usually too busy looking at the virtual keys to see that my thumbs are hitting the right ones.

It turns out that the thumbs are the problem, at least for me. Yesterday, I discovered that if I type with one finger and no thumbs, I can increase my speed and accuracy considerably. I got so good at typing this way that I could mostly take me eyes off the virtual keys, which enabled me to be more agile with accepting or ignoring the suggested corrections.

The responsiveness of the virtual keys seems to enable rapid one-finger typing, whereas this would have been tricky and cumbersome on the Blackberry. The irony is that I discovered this whilst using a mobile app I’ve been working on, which has the word ‘thumb’ in its name. Maybe I should swap that to ‘finger.’
