I can’t wait to see Cloverfield — 1-18-08 in the UK - it comes out this Friday (1st Feb). I’m a great fan of JJ Abrams, ever since falling in love with the series Alias. I’m a Lost fan too, although I’m getting a little weary trying to figure what’s inside the never ending mystery boxes.
So, naturally there’s a lot of talk about what the Cloverfield monster looks like in the movie. My son has spent a good deal of time on the Web tracking down spoilers and so forth. Alas, he won’t be old enough to see the movie.
That’s when I got thinking about ways to market stuff like this on the mobile. What I came up with was a simple mosaic idea. Take a picture of the monster and divide it up into lots of tiny pieces that you need to stick together again to see the whole picture. Let people sign up to receive the pieces gradually on their mobile until all the pieces have been sent to coincide with the movie launch.
To add some fun, don’t send all the pieces to each subscriber, but only a random subset, thus forcing people to try swapping their pieces to get the whole set.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be a full reveal, but something better than you can get anywhere else.
