The blessing of mobile phones…

May 8th, 2007 · 7 Comments

I haven’t posted for a while for two reasons. First, I was on vacation. Second, during vacation I got the bad news that one of my brothers was in a major road accident. He sustained serious injuries, including head trauma, and is still in hospital. During those awful moments of trying to get updates on his condition, especially as we were told he was in a life-threatening situation, the use of mobile phones was invaluable. Between various family members, we stayed in touch constantly via mobile calls and texting, which was a great source of relief.

For years I have been involved with trying to push a “mobile data” revolution, promoting new modalities of mobile communication. Today I am just grateful for the simple blessing of mobile phones as they are.

Behind the cold veil of “telecoms” and “ICT” lies that simple fact - people want to connect to other people.

I pray that your brother recovers quickly and that your family stays strong through this time.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. Hope he recovers soon.

Dan Bricklin mentioned that all people really want to do on phones is to talk to one another. Forget about generating content for users. Mobile phones is already Web 2.0 - user-generated content.

Thanks to all those who sent well wishes for my brother. He is just coming out of hospital after 6 weeks and onto the recovery path with the support of family and friends. We spend our time blogging and talking shop, sometimes on quite useless topics, which seem important at the time, and then an accident like this happens and shakes the ground. My heart, wishes and prayers go out to all those out there who are suffering.
